Buying gold in Dubai is easy. Taking it home without surprises at the airport requires a little planning. This guide explains how much gold you can carry from Dubai, what you must declare when leaving the UAE, and India's duty-free limits under the 2026 baggage rules.
Leaving the UAE
The UAE does not limit how much gold you may take out, but large amounts must be declared. Travellers entering or leaving the UAE are required to declare cash, precious metals and precious stones above AED 60,000 in value. Declaring is simple and keeps you on the right side of the rules; failing to declare can lead to penalties.
Keep your tax invoices together in your hand luggage. They prove what you bought, where and for how much.
Arriving in India: the 2026 baggage rules
India's Baggage Rules 2026 took effect on 2 February 2026 and made the duty-free gold allowance purely weight-based:

- Women: up to 40 grams of gold jewellery duty-free
- Men: up to 20 grams of gold jewellery duty-free
- Only for Indian passengers who have lived abroad for more than one year
- Applies to jewellery only: chains, bangles, earrings and rings
Bars and coins
Gold bars, coins and biscuits do not qualify for the duty-free allowance. They are dutiable from the first gram, and the effective import duty on gold rose to 15% on 13 May 2026.
The 1 kg route
Eligible passengers who have been abroad for at least six months may import up to 1 kg of gold in their baggage, but this is a dutiable route, not a duty-free one. The gold must be declared and the duty paid at the airport.
What happens if you exceed the allowance?
Declare it at the red channel. Customs officers will weigh the gold, value it and calculate the duty. Not declaring gold above the allowance risks confiscation and penalties, which can cost far more than the duty itself.
Practical checklist
- Buy jewellery rather than bars if you want to use the duty-free allowance
- Keep original invoices showing weight, karat and price
- Wear or carry jewellery in your hand luggage, never checked bags
- Declare anything above the allowance, and declare in the UAE above AED 60,000
- Check the rules again shortly before you travel
Other countries
Every country sets its own allowance, and many treat gold bars differently from jewellery. If you are flying to Pakistan, the UK, Europe or elsewhere, check that country's official customs website before buying.
Frequently asked questions

Does it matter if the jewellery is new?
