Every year thousands of visitors ask the same question before flying home: is gold cheaper in Dubai than in India? The short answer is yes, the raw gold is usually cheaper in Dubai. But whether you save money depends on taxes, making charges and Indian customs rules, which changed significantly in 2026.
Why gold can be cheaper in Dubai
Both markets start from the same global price of gold in US dollars. The difference comes from what each country adds on top.
- UAE: there is no import duty on gold. Jewellery carries 5% VAT, and investment-grade bars and coins are generally zero-rated.
- India: gold attracts a customs duty when it enters the country, plus 3% GST on the final sale. India's effective import duty on gold was raised to 15% (10% basic customs duty plus 5% cess) from 13 May 2026.
Because the dirham is pegged to the dollar at 3.6725, the Dubai price tracks the global price directly. You can see it live on our gold rate today page.
A worked example (index method)
Exact prices change every minute, so here is the logic using an index where the raw gold value = 100:

- Dubai: gold 100 + making charge (say 8) = 108, plus 5% VAT = about 113.4
- India: gold 100 + 15% duty = 115, + making charge (say 8) = 123, plus 3% GST = about 126.7
In this illustration the same piece costs roughly 10–12% less in Dubai. Your real saving depends on the making charge you negotiate in each country, so always compare like with like.
The catch: India's customs allowance
Buying cheaper in Dubai only helps if you do not pay the difference back at Indian customs. Under India's Baggage Rules 2026, which came into force on 2 February 2026, eligible passengers can bring the following duty-free:
- Women: up to 40 grams of gold jewellery
- Men: up to 20 grams of gold jewellery
- Only for passengers who have lived abroad for more than a year
- Jewellery only: bars and coins get no duty-free allowance and are taxed from the first gram
The older rupee value caps were removed, so the allowance is now based on weight alone. Anything above it must be declared and duty paid. Read our full guide on how much gold you can carry from Dubai.
When buying in Dubai makes sense
- You are an NRI who has lived abroad for over a year and buys jewellery within the allowance
- You negotiate a low making charge; see our guide to making charges in Dubai
- You keep the gold in the UAE as savings rather than carrying bars to India
When it may not save you much
- You are carrying bars or coins to India: the 15% duty removes most of the advantage
- You pay a high making charge on designer jewellery
- You exceed the allowance and pay duty at the airport
Tips before you buy

Frequently asked questions
Is Dubai gold purer than Indian gold?
No. A 22K piece contains 91.6% gold in both countries. What matters is the hallmark and the invoice.
Can tourists get the UAE VAT back on gold?
Visitors may be able to reclaim part of the VAT through the UAE tourist refund scheme at participating shops. Ask the shop before paying, as conditions apply.
Should I buy bars in Dubai to take to India?
Usually not: bars have no duty-free allowance in India, so the import duty applies from the first gram.
Customs and tax rules change. Always confirm the latest rules with Indian customs (CBIC) and the UAE authorities before you travel.
